What’s Wrong with My Water Pressure?
October 3, 2017
There’s nothing quite like a high-pressure shower to massage away the stresses of the day, but often our pressurized showers turn into a weak spray at best. How do you restore that massaging pressure you originally had in your shower or sink? There are many plumbing problems that may result in weakened water pressure in all areas of your home. Keep an eye out for these common issues when faced with inexplicable, less-than-ideal pressure.
Are Your Valves Open?
For every free-standing home, there are two water line valves which must remain fully open at all times to ensure maximum pressure. First, check your home’s main shut-off valve on one of your exterior walls or in a utility room near the water heater. This shut-off valve controls the flow of the city’s water into your home, so it’s important you check it’s fully open by turning the gate valve all the way in the counterclockwise direction or a ball valve parallel to the pipe, depending on which valve type you have in your home.
If your home’s valve is open, check on the city’s water meter valve, typically located in front of your home near the street. If either of these valves were partially or fully closed, it may be due to some recent repairs or service to the water lines in the area or your home’s plumbing system. Check these valves after every instance of plumbing service.
Problems with the Pressure Regulator?
Depending on your home’s plumbing system, you may be experiencing a sudden decline in pressure throughout your home because of a failing pressure regulator. Not all homes have them, but if a regulator is installed in your home and you notice a decline or increase in pressure across all fixtures, call your local plumber to examine and replace the regulator.
Do You Have Blockages?
From dirt to minerals and even corrosion of metal, your home’s plumbing pipes are susceptible to all sorts of blockages that may slow or stop the flow of water through your home, resulting in low water pressure. The type of blockage you have may be difficult to determine without the right plumbing expertise. Dirt, sand and stones can be carried into your home’s pipes from a cracked or broken water main outside or by someone in the household washing similar debris down the drain, like you might after a messy trip to the beach.
Even the minerals in your water may build up a blockage over time. Hard water can deposit minerals along pipe walls which can eventually grow into large blockages or calcify your showerhead, reducing its effectiveness. These can usually be remedied with chemical plumbing cleaners, or in the case of showerheads by soaking the head in vinegar followed by rinsing.
If, however, the blockage is a result of corrosive buildup, you may be in for a more expensive repair. Pipes aren’t intended to last forever. Once a pipe reaches the end of its lifetime, it begins to break down and create a blockage of corrosive material. This generally means your plumbing system needs to be overhauled and replaced.
Is There a Leak?
One of the most obvious plumbing problems that may lead to lower water pressure is a moderate to severe leak. A tiny drip beneath the sink may not result in a significant loss of pressure, but a consistent leak could disrupt water flow.
Check for signs of leaks throughout the interior and exterior of your home. If you notice wet spots, discoloration, bubbling or puddles in the yard, you may have a leak. To be sure, shut off your water valves and leave them like that for a few hours. If you notice an increase in water usage when you return, the odds are good you have a leak that should be corrected by a plumbing professional as soon as possible.
