Money-Saving Tips for Your Electric Bill
June 7, 2017
With summer in full swing, your air conditioning system will be running at full-blast as we get into July and August. Keeping cool during the warmer months can quickly become expensive. If you’re looking to save money this summer, check out some of these easy tips to cut down your electric bill.
Give Your AC a Break
If your electricity bill is high because you’re constantly running your air conditioning system, one of the easiest ways to save some money is by cutting back on your AC usage. But how do you stay comfortable without your cooling system? Use natural ventilation when possible. Open up windows and doors on opposite sides of your home to let a breeze travel through.
This is especially useful for people in the Sacramento area. Our days can easily get in the 90s, but we’re lucky that the weather still cools down quite a bit at night. There’s no reason you have to run your AC all night when you can open up some windows once the sun has gone down!
When you’re in a room, turn on the ceiling fan. Fans move air around, creating a wind chill effect that can make a space feel upto four degrees cooler.
Control Your Thermostat
When using your air conditioning system, don’t set the thermostat any cooler than 78 degrees Fahrenheit. If your thermostat has a programmable setting function, set your AC to increase the temperature when you’re away. You can return to a comfortable level when you get home. This ensures no energy is wasted on cooling an empty house!
Try to keep lamps, televisions and other heat-producing appliances away from the thermostat itself. It’s possible for the internal sensor to detect the additional heat and force the AC to run longer than necessary.
Prevent Unwanted Heat Transfer
Any additional heat that enters your home will only make your AC run more than would otherwise be necessary. Use energy-efficient window treatments to filter as much light and radiation as possible. Cover any windows during the day to further block out hot rays. Be sure to look for and seal any air leaks in your home. Not only do leaks allow the cool air to escape, they also let warm air seep in from outdoors.
Air Conditioner Maintenance
An efficient air conditioning system is a cost-effective system. Most manufacturers recommend you change your AC unit’s air filter at least once every other month. Households with pets or people with allergies might have to clean out their system even more frequently, but a homeowner can only do so much. At least once a year you should hire a professional to come examine your entire AC system. An HVAC technician will perform a comprehensive tune-up and diagnose any problems your AC might have. Scheduling an appointment before summer starts ensures your home stays cool when you need it most!
