Get All Your Ducts in a Row
October 5, 2016
I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “get all your ducks in a row.” It means to be well prepared for something that is going to happen. Well, your ducts, not the quack quack kind, but the kind in the crawl space, attic, basement or garage, should be well-prepared for something that is going to happen…like the summer heat or winter cold.
Ducts are used to distribute conditioned air throughout the house. In a typical house, however, about 20 to 30 percent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts.
The result is higher utility bills and difficulty keeping the house comfortable, no matter how the thermostat is set.
How do you know your home has a poorly performing duct system?
Signs you may have a poorly performing duct system, with apologies to Jeff Foxworthy:
*If you have a high summer and winter bill…You may just have a poorly performing duct system.
*If you have rooms that are stuffy and never seem comfortable…You may just have a poorly performing duct system.
*If your system’s filters get dirty quickly…You may just have a poorly performing duct system.
*If your ducts are located in the attic or crawl space and they are not insulated or have damaged insulation…You may just have a poorly performing duct system.
*If your flexible ducts are tangled or kinked…You may just have a poorly performing duct system.
There are many benefits to duct sealing. A duct system that is well designed and properly sealed can make your home more comfortable, energy efficient, and safer for your family. It will also save you money!
Another reason to have your ducts inspected for leaks or holes is as the weather turns colder, and as winter approaches, mice or rats may seek to make themselves at home in the duct system. They look for holes in the ductwork and are attracted to food or cooking smells from inside the house. If mice set up house in your ductwork it can bring odor, filth, and even disease.
Most homeowners don’t want to dive headfirst into the dark, cobweb-infested crawl space or attic to find out if they have a poorly performing duct system. Besides, that’s where the creepy crawlers are!
Don’t worry, we’re on it!
