5 Plumbing Tips to Prepare Your Home for the Summer
June 28, 2022
Before heading into the hottest summer days, it’s a good idea to prepare your home’s plumbing system. As it gets hotter out, you’re more likely to use more water taking showers, washing clothes, keeping well-hydrated, and watering your lawn. When you use more water, your plumbing system will have to work harder. To ensure your plumbing system performs at its best, you can follow these five tips to prepare your system for the summer.
1. Look for Leaks
The winter can put your plumbing system under more stress and create issues you won’t immediately notice. Before the summer, search for plumbing damage by checking for leaks throughout your home. As you inspect your home for leaks, be on the lookout for broken components, corrosion, dripping water, and rust on the interior and exterior of your home.
To ensure you’ve done a complete inspection, use a flashlight to check darker areas and any cabinets. If you find a leak, turn off your water to ensure you’re not wasting it and call a plumber.
2. Assess Your Water Heater’s Conditions and Turn The Temperature Down
Your water heater has to work its hardest during the winter to compensate for the colder temperatures. As a result, you’ll want to check it for signs of damage, such as corrosion, leaks, and rust, prior to the summer. If you notice any, it’s time for a professional water heater repair.
Alongside checking for damage, turn your water heater’s temperature down a few degrees. Since you’ll probably be taking colder showers in the summer, turning down the temperature won’t impact your comfort and can reduce wear on your water heater while reducing its energy consumption.
3. Check Your Washing Machine
Over the summer, people tend to sweat more, leading them to change their clothes and do loads of laundry more often. Since you’ll probably be using your washing machine more regularly, you need to ensure it’s ready for the uptick in usage by taking a few minutes to inspect it for damage.
If you notice any damages or cracks in your washing machine’s hoses, connections, or other parts, it’s time to call a professional plumber to fix the issue. When a washing machine is past fixing or simply old, you may want to skip the repair and replace it instead. Alongside giving you better performance, a new, high-efficiency washing machine can reduce your water consumption and help you save money.
4. Clear Your Gutters
While you might not think of your gutters as being a part of your plumbing system, they’re critical for removing water away from your home. Over the winter, leaves and other debris can build up in your gutters, potentially causing water to overflow and seep into your home’s walls. To avoid any structural damage or foundation issues, always remember to clear your gutters of any debris before the summer.
5. Inspect Your Sump Pump
When you have a sump pump installed in your home, you’ll want to inspect it at the beginning of the summer. Since summer storms can show up out of the blue, you’ll need your sump pump to be ready to handle them. Turn the sump pump on, make sure it has power, and then pour water into it. If your sump pump doesn’t start processing the water, something’s wrong with it, and you’ll need a plumber to provide a sump pump repair.
